Choosing Your Polish - Portuguese Interpreter
Do not make the mistake of assuming a good translator is automatically a good
interpreter. The two skills are entirely different. While a document translator
works in relative isolation and has recourse to dictionaries and text books at
his leisure, a Polish interpreter must satisfy other criteria. Another key
difference is that most face-to-face interpreters will work in both directions.
While a document translator may be confident only when translating from Polish
to Portuguese, an interpreter may need to be as fluent in translating from Portuguese
to Polish as they are in translating from Polish to Portuguese
There are three different ways in which your Portuguese Interpreter can work to
suit particular situations.
Portuguese Business/Liaison Interpreter
A business interpreter will interpret into Portuguese more or less sentence by
sentence, allowing a smooth interchange between those on both sides. The
interpreter will maintain a conversational flow into and out of Portuguese
allowing questions, answers and clarifications to be made in both directions at
any time. This method of working by the interpreter is ideal for business
meetings, where both parties need to be satisfied they have been able to raise
issues and had them addressed.
Consecutive Interpreter
Here the interpreter will take notes in Portuguese while the speaker is speaking
in Polish. Only after the speaker has finished will the interpreter deliver
the speech in Portuguese. A consecutive interpreter is employed mostly to
interpret speeches or spontaneous talks which cannot be interrupted.
Simultaneous Interpreter
The interpreter will deliver their Portuguese interpretation at the same time the
speaker is speaking, never more than a few words behind. Because two people are
speaking at once, simultaneous interpreters are used mostly in large scale
venues such as conference centres or government buildings which have special
facilities including booths and headphone systems. On a smaller, impromptu
scale, a simultaneous interpreter can work by “whispering”.
Portuguese Interpreter Requirements
Your Portuguese interpreter should be polite, efficient and unobtrusive. You are
the person delivering the speech and making the decisions. Your interpreter
needs to be entirely self-effacing, and all but invisible to your Portuguese
colleagues.
